Man mistakenly brings gun onto Lodi High School grounds

Police arrested a man suspected of carrying a hunting rifle in his pickup truck at Lodi High School on Thursday morning.

John Baker, 18, a former Lodi High School student, arrived around 10:30 a.m. to pick up a student, said Sgt. Sierra Brucia of the Lodi Police Department.

While the car was parked, a campus supervisor discovered the unloaded rifle inside the pickup, Brucia said.

Lodi High Principal Bob Lofsted said the student is an avid hunter and forgot that the rifle was in his truck.

“A lot of these kids have hunting licenses, and unfortunately they’re more forgetful than most,” he said. “But there was no (malicious intent) here.”

Lodi Police Officer Ryan Holz, a school resource officer at Lodi High, said Baker didn’t know he couldn’t have a hunting rifle in his truck on school grounds.

Baker was arrested and is being held in San Joaquin County jail on suspicion of carrying a firearm and ammunition on school grounds, Brucia said.
