Lodi Memorial Hospital received an average safety grade from a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The report was released Wednesday by the Leapfrog Group, after it examined records of more than 2,500 hospitals nationwide.

It found zero incidences of foreign objects left inside patients following surgery, or any air embolism cases in the period reviewed, from July 2009 to June 2011.

However, the hospital fell short in the number of intensive care unit physicians, and had a larger than average number of patients with a collapsed lung following surgery, according to the report.

Kaiser Permanente in South Sacramento, which serves a number of local residents, received the top grade in Leapfrog's annual safety report. Kaiser Stockton was not included.

However, St. Joseph's Hospital received a "B," while San Joaquin General Hospital was awarded a "D."

All hospital scores and details can be viewed online.
