San Joaquin County Sheriff Steve Moore wasn't sure if his four-page memo outlining expectations would deter the man he wanted to become the new assistant sheriff. But after reading through the overwhelming list, Dave Souza accepted the promotion, and on Monday he was presented with his new badge.

"It's very humbling," said Souza, who's been Sheriff's captain since September 2008. "It's very exciting. We're facing a lot of challenges. There's a lot of changes occurring at the state level with corrections, and they're impacting us at the jail."

Souza will oversee courthouse security and the jail, among other duties. He first started working in the custody division after being hired by the sheriff's office in 1990.

Moore said that the sheriff's office is lacking experience in the custody division, so Souza's experience will be vital.

After working in the custody division, Souza transferred to the operations division in 1998 and later worked in investigations.

In 2002 he moved to the robbery and homicide unit, where he worked until his promotion to sergeant in 2004. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2007, and also served as patrol division acting captain from 2007 to 2008.

Souza said he could bring a lot to his new position from his previous experiences.

"Trust your people. Mentoring is vital to this organization. And lead by example," he said. "As a sheriff's office, we'll face a lot of challenges going forward, and I look forward to working with the sheriff to keep the community safe."

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
