The Lodi Public Library has seen the usage of its self-check out system rise dramatically over the past year.

Nearly 50 percent of all check outs were done using the system — which operates much like the self-check out lanes in the supermarket — in September compared to 25 percent at the same time last year, according to library data.

Library director Dean Gualco said there has been a concerted effort by the staff to familiarize patrons with the self-check out system.

WIth more people using the self-check out system, library staff have more time to help patrons and work on programs offered at the library, rather than being stuck behind the circulation desk, he said.

The goal, he said, is to have 80 percent of check outs done through the automated system.
