An alleged Sureño was taken into custody after attempting to bring a knife to the Grape Festival, police said.
Cesar Anthony Monje, 19, was arrested shortly after 5 p.m. Friday while waiting in line to enter the festival, said Sgt. Doug Chinn of the Lodi Police Department.
“Police have had previous contact with Monje and knew he was on probation,” Chinn said. “They did a probation search on him and found a knife with a 4-inch blade concealed on his belt.”
Monje, an alleged Sureño, told police he carries the knife to protect himself from rival Norteños, Chinn said.
“(Monje) said he gets jumped a lot,” Chinn said.
Monje was arrested for possessing a dangerous weapon and for participating in a street gang, police said.
