A priest from Colombia who was filling in temporarily for his vacationing brother at Lodi’s St. Anne’s Catholic Church was arrested Sunday on sexual molestation and other charges in Yuba City.
The Rev. Julio Guarin-Sosa, 43, was being held at Sutter County Jail in Yuba City. He was to be arraigned Tuesday.
Guarin-Sosa was serving at St. Anne’s on a temporary basis, filling in for his brother, who has been on vacation for about three weeks, Sister Terry Davis of the Stockton Diocese said in an email.
Guarin-Sosa is charged with sexual battery, illegal battery and annoying or molesting a child under 18 years of age, according to the Sutter County Sheriff’s website.
The Appeal-Democrat newspaper in Marysville quoted a Yuba City Police spokeswoman as saying that Guarin-Sosa was in town on Friday to perform Mass at a private home when he engaged in inappropriate contact with a 16-year-old girl. The incident was reported to authorities on Saturday, and the arrest took place on Sunday, the Appeal-Democrat reported.
As a result of the charges, Guarin-Sosa’s permission to minister in the Stockton Diocese has been revoked, Bishop Stephen Blaire in an email to the media.
The Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests said in a statement that California bishops have a “habit of accepting foreign priests with little to no investigation of their backgrounds.”
A statement from the diocese said Bishop Stephen Blaire had received a letter of good standing from Guarin-Sosa’s diocese in Colombia. The diocese in Colombia has been informed of the charges.
