A woman has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after she was suspected of giving birth to a baby girl early Tuesday morning and leaving her in a flower bed, according to Galt police.
The baby survived.
Police received a 911 call around 5:20 a.m. about a newborn found crying in front of a residence in the 500 block of B Street. Upon arrival, officers said they found a woman on the front porch of the residence and later determined she had given birth to the baby, according to police.
At first, the suspect, Dwanda Mahoney, a 30-year-old transient from Galt, denied being pregnant or having given birth to the infant, officers said.
She was taken to the hospital for treatment, then arrested and booked into Sacramento County Jail on Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, medical personnel on-scene transported the baby to a local hospital emergency room, where she was found to be suffering from hypothermia, police said. Police believe the infant would not have survived if the 911 call had been made any later.
Her condition is improving, and she is reported to be in fair condition, according to a news release.
Child Protective Services has been notified and will take custody of the child pending medical treatment and release.
