For about $50,000, the Galt City Council chambers will soon be retrofitted with new wireless microphones and touchscreen computers.

The sound system purchase and installation was approved at Tuesday’s regular meeting. It will be handled by Spinitar, a Southern California-based company.

Funding will come from public education governments grants through money paid by cable subscribers for improved public media access.

City Manager Jason Behrmann said it has been more than 10 years since the current sound system was installed, and it has become unreliable in recent months.

“The new system will improve sound quality both in the room and broadcast quality on the TV and internet,” he said.

The city could decide to add other enhancements, including electronic voting that could be displayed on overhead screens and MP3 technology to replace the current dual cassette tape deck, which is part of the audio recording system.

Other chamber improvements, including removing wood paneling and replacing other outdated wall coverings, are already in the works.
