Trustees for the Galt Joint Union High School District have approved spending money on a contract that grants Liberty Ranch High School’s request to hold its Class of 2014 graduation at Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento.

The 4-0 vote was made at last Tuesday’s regular board meeting. Trustee Angela DaPrato was absent.

The $4,225 cost for the June 6 ceremony will come from lottery funds.

Both the expense and holding graduation outside city limits have been items of contention for years, with one current trustee and one former trustee voicing concerns that holding the school’s 2012 inaugural ceremony there set a precedent for future graduating classes.

Principal Brian Deis has said the cost could be even higher if Liberty Ranch holds graduation at the school, as the school’s football field has neither seating nor field lights. Students have said they do not want their graduation ceremony held on Galt High’s football field.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
