Speaker to address childhood ‘word gap’ at Pacific

Kevin Slattery of Providence Talks, a Rhode Island-based organization that works to improve children’s literacy, will address the “word gap” experienced by children living below the poverty line at University of the Pacific on Friday.

Research by psychologists Betty Hart and Todd Risely from 20 years ago shows that children living in poverty hear approximately 30 million fewer words by the time they are 4 years old than children from higher-income families, according to a press release from University of the Pacific.
