- How is the construction project affecting you?
-
"For me, the interchange project does require some slight route
modifications depending on where you're going, but everything is
still very accessible."
— Jason Behrman, city manager
"The interchange project hasn't been as bad as I anticipated. I
can still get to everywhere I need to go, and I've learned some
ways around town that I didn't know before."
— Terry Metzger, Galt resident
"I have adjusted my driving to avoid the construction — except
from time to time I like to drive down 99 to the Fairway exit just
so I can see the progress. It is exciting to the vision of the
future for Galt."
— Barbara Payne, mayor
"The road access to my campus is getting worse as the heavy
equipment continues to destroy what is left of Camellia Way.
Because of the 'road closed" signs, many students don't know
whether we are opened or not. Additionally, because of construction
materials along both sides of Camellia Way, we have lost a
considerable amount of parking. I know the new interchange will
greatly improve traffic flow in Galt and it is much overdue;
however, I will be glad when construction is completed."
— Karen Liu, Galt Adult School administrator
- Project timeline
-
May 2003: The Galt City Council reviewed a
presentation on the Central Galt Interchange design process and
provided direction. Council members asked that letters be sent to
state and federal representatives to make the funding for the
interchange project a priority.
September 2004: The city held an open house
providing residents and businesses with an opportunity to help
determine the proper scope of the environmental analysis for
reconstructing the interchange.
May 2007: Following a public hearing, council
members voted to certify the Final Environmental Impact Report for
the project.
October 2010: Groundbreaking ceremony, although
construction did not officially begin until two months later
November 2010: Contract awarded to lowest
bidder
Oct. 27, 2011: Reconstruction of Crystal Way
and A Street decks both completed.
Late 2012: The project will be complete, it is
hoped, in time for Christmas.
- Project by the numbers
-
$43.5 million: Total cost of the project,
including $7.5 million on right-of-way acquisition, and buying and
demolishing four homes in the area.
$20 million: Winning bid by Teichert
Construction Company for construction alone.
$1,000-a-day: Charge by the city if contractors
do not finish the project by a pre-determined deadline, excluding
weekends and rainy days.
495 trees removed to make way for improvements.
60-plus: Age of the current C Street-Highway 99
overpass.
25: Average number of workers on-site at any
given time.
21: The number of citizens who attended an
informal public meeting in April 2007 to provide verbal and written
comments on the project's Environmental Impact Report. Seven
spoke.
17: Number of public meetings, including four
interest group committee meetings, were held before construction
began.
6: The number of lanes the C Street will be
once it is reopened to traffic.

A year ago this month, contractors officially broke ground on
arguably the biggest-ever construction project in Galt.
The major interchange modifications currently underway should
alleviate congested traffic on the C Street bridge seen during
morning and afternoon commutes, and on days the Galt Market is
open.
