The Visionary Institute of Math and Science Education Group's board of directors requested local consultant Jack Bray contact the Lodi Unified School District Board of Education regarding its intention to submit a charter petition for an elementary charter school for the visual and performing arts in collaboration with the Valley Sierra California Arts Project.

It is intended that the current facilities of Clements School be rented or leased from the district to accommodate the program and be named the Clements Charter School of the Arts, Bray said in a letter to trustees Friday.

An advisory group has been formed and has held initial meetings to begin work on a petition and to seek parent and community involvement in the Clements/Lockford area and immediate surrounding communities, according to Bray.

"We have been informed by a resident in the Clements-Lockeford area that the Clements/Lockeford Lions Club want to purchase the school and convert it into a community center," he wrote in an email.

"VIMS Charter Advisory Group has had contact with residents that have voiced a concern about this possible purchase and have said that this historic school should continue to operate as an elementary school."

To save money, the school board voted to close Clements School at the end of the school year and move its students to new facilities at nearby Lockeford Elementary School.

Bray was involved with the proposed D-MAND charter school for the arts that was denied by Lodi Unified earlier this year.
