The San Joaquin County Board of Education has elected Dave Sorgent as its president for the 2009-10 year. Jill Fritchen will serve as the board's vice president and County Superintendent of Schools and Fredrick A. Wentworth will serve as secretary.
Sorgent, who lives in Woodbridge with his wife, was first elected to the board in 2006. He represents Area 5, which includes portions of Lodi, Linden, Escalon and Ripon school districts, along with all of Galt's New Hope and Oak View Elementary districts.
"It's great to be able to continue to serve the students of San Joaquin County using the knowledge and experience I've garnered during my 43 years as an educator," Sorgent said in a written statement. "Serving as president of a forward-thinking and innovative agency makes this job exciting."
Sorgent is a retired educator, football, basketball and Stagg High Academic Decathlon coach; and former administrator for San Joaquin County public schools. As an educator, he has worked with students at the middle school, high school and college levels.
Sorgent also served as coordinator of Student Activities and developmental director of the Educational Foundation at San Joaquin County Office of Education. During his time at SJCOE, he helped expand student activities to include the county spelling bee and academic pentathlon, and he was able to grow the Foundation's reserve to more than $100,000.
He was such a part of the county's pentathlon, which included successfully getting all comprehensive high schools in the county to participate in 2007, that the organization named a trophy after him, the Dave Sorgent Winner's Cup.
His achievements as an educator were recognized and honored with the 1988 San Joaquin County Teacher of the Year award, and the 2001 Schoolmaster of the Year award.
In his spare time, Sorgent has held leadership positions with the 49er Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Stockton Civic Theatre and Kiwanis Club.
He and his wife have been married for 27 years and have two sons. His six-year term ends in 2012.
The San Joaquin County Board of Education fulfills a variety of duties, including budget approval, and hearing appeals pertaining to student expulsions, inter-district transfers and charter school petitions.
Board members receive a $300 monthly stipend and health benefits through the Health JPA.
