A Lodi man suspected of causing a crash that killed six members of a local family was under the influence of alcohol and driving faster than 100 miles per hour, according to Lodi police affidavits.
Ryan Christopher Morales, 28, is in critical condition in a Sacramento-area hospital following a horrific six-vehicle collision at the intersection of Ham Lane and Vine Street on Oct. 22.
According to Lodi police affidavits, Morales had a blood-alcohol level of 0.20, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08, when he was admitted to the hospital following the crash.
Police also found the speedometer on Morales’ SUV stuck at a position of more than 100 miles per hour, court records show. In the report, investigators state that the position of the speedometer indicates Morales’ speed at the time of the crash.
The report coincides with statements from witnesses who said Morales was driving “faster than freeway speeds.”
On Friday, James Morales, the suspect’s father, said his son had spent at least a week in a medically induced coma. Early last week, Ryan Morales was in and out of consciousness and at times speaking, James Morales said. He added that the family has not told him why he’s in the hospital or that he was involved in a crash that left six people dead and six more injured.
Lodi police haven’t been able to interview Ryan Morales yet, but officers are monitoring him around the clock and are prepared to arrest him once his medical condition improves.
Last week, authorities said they plan to pursue murder charges against Morales.
Morales is suspected of killing parents Luis Miranda Ochoa, 32, Viviana Rodriguez Salgado, 31, who was seven months pregnant, and their children Irvin Miranda, 12, Jose Luis Miranda, 6, and Stephanie Miranda, 5.
Nine-year-old Eden Miranda, the lone family member to survive the crash, is still recovering in a Sacramento-area hospital. He was recently upgraded from critical to serious condition and transferred out of the intensive care unit and into a regular room.
