Stagg High School Principal Andre Phillips, who won a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics, will be the guest speaker at Lodi's annual Martin Luther King Day observance.
Phillips won the 400-meter hurdle event in the 1988 Olympics and has since turned to education, having been a teacher at Staff and an assistant principal at Franklin High School in Stockton before becoming principal at Stagg.
The Celebration of Unity, open to the community, is held each year in Lodi to honor King's legacy to discourage bigotry and hatred due to someone's skin color or beliefs.
The observance is sponsored by the Breakthrough Project, a group formed in the aftermath of a cross burning at Tokay High School on Jan. 20, 1998. Breakthrough Project members are available to victims of racial or social prejudice, and participate in activities promoting racial, religious and cultural tolerance.
Breakthrough Project President Patty Radotic, a teacher at Millswood Middle School, said she hopes that more Lodi residents attend this year's Lodi observance.
