Final demolition of the Jaycee Hall building has been delayed due to the discovery of lead-based paint under the vinyl siding, according to Galt City Manager Jason Behrmann.
The property at 405 5th St. was at the center of a costly lawsuit between the city and the now-defunct Boys and Girls Club of Galt. It was ultimately purchased by the city in 2010, but there has not been money available to rehabilitate the building.
At one point, a local church showed interest in fixing it up to use as a community center, but the work proved too costly and the Galt City Council voted last spring to have the aging building demolished.
That work began earlier this month, but was halted due to the lead-based paint issue. A remediation plan is currently being developed.
The cost of actual removal is unknown at this time, Behrmann said Monday.
