Cinco de Mayo a financial fiesta for local business
Paula and Jim Payne pose while dining at Alebrijes Mexican Bistro on Saturday evening. “We came for his birthday and the Sangria,” said Paula. “We used to go all the time when they were in Isleton, when they closed we decided to come here for my birthday. The food is awesome, the chile relleno can’t be beat. I don’t like guacamole but I love theirs,” Jim said.

Cinco de Mayo is not actually a traditional Mexican celebration.
Rather, it is a holiday that began in the United States that now boasts hundreds of celebrations nationwide.
Few places in Mexico actually celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The celebration is based on the 1862 Battle of Puebla, when outnumbered Mexican forces defeated the invading French Army.
Originally, Cinco de Mayo resulted from the patriotic zeal of Mexican-Americans in the U.S. who saw the victory over the French as a blow against the Confederacy.
The French supported the Confederates during the Civil War.
The Mexican-American residents of California, Oregon and Nevada backed the Union. Celebrations that began in the late 1800s eventually died off as the memory of the victory at the Battle of Puebla faded.
But in the late 1960s, members of the Chicano Movement resurrected Cinco de Mayo celebrations as a way to highlight Mexicans' cultural pride.
