An early morning vehicle pursuit with police landed two Lodi teenagers in jail Monday, facing a bevy of charges.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., Joel Gonzales, 18, and a 14-year-old friend broke into a car that was parked in front of a home and began driving away, according to Sgt. Doug Chinn of the Lodi Police Department.

The owner of the car, however, heard the car start and hopped into a second vehicle they owned to follow the teenagers, Chinn said.

The owner then called Lodi police while they followed the teenagers in the car, and officers caught up to the vehicle on the corner of Eden Street and Central Avenue, according to Chinn.

Chinn added that there was somewhat of a standoff between the officer in his patrol car and the teenagers suspected of stealing the vehicle, before Gonzales, who was driving the car, hit the gas and continued north on Central Avenue.

Lodi police officers Eric Bradley and Chris Delgado pursued, following Gonzales and the 14-year-old through numerous city blocks, Chinn said.

When Gonzales reached the corner of East Lodi Avenue and Beckman Road, the attempted a sharp turn but instead collided with a parked semi-truck, Chinn said.

Gonzales and the other teen then attempted to escape the vehicle, police said, but the damage was too great to the car and they could not get out.

Bradley and Delgado arrested the two teenagers, who face numerous charges including vehicle theft and evading police officers.

Gonzales also faces a felony charge of child endangerment, as well as charges of hit and run, driving under the influence and driving without a license.

"It was a very violent situation, and he did place the 14-year-old in danger," Chinn said.

Gonzales was transferred to San Joaquin County Jail on Tuesday.

Gonzales should also be investigated for pedophilia. The fact that his boyfriend was 14 is a bit suspicious to me.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
