Lodi Memorial Hospital is recommending everyone receive both seasonal flu and swine flu, or H1N1, vaccines this year.

The seasonal flu shots are available at local clinics, but the swine flu shots are not yet available, said Carol Farron, hospital spokesman. The shots are expected to arrive sometime this month, she said.

San Joaquin County Public Health Services will receive the doses first and then distribute them to health clinics. It is unclear how many vaccines will be available, Farron said.

The Center for Disease Control has been clear that the swine flu shot is perfectly safe, Farron said.

"One way to mitigate it becoming very bad this year is to do the responsible thing and get a flu shot," she said.

To stay up-to-date on the availability of both vaccines in Lodi and Galt, call the hospital's flu shot hotline at 339-7469.

The hospital is bracing to treat patients with both of the viruses.

"With two flus this year, it's going to be particularly challenging to keep people germ-free," hospital spokeswoman Carol Farron said.

The hospital is recommending family members and friends avoid visiting hospitalized patients, especially if the visitors feel sick themselves. The hospital is also recommending people do not bring children to the hospital.

This is the first time the hospital has recommended people stay home, and hope it will reduce the spread of the virus.

"We are very cautious here and do everything we can among ourselves and our staff, but it is hard for us to control what people bring in with them when people are coming for a visit," Farron said.

Who should get a vaccine?

The CDC recommends the following groups get a seasonal vaccine every year:

— Children from six months to 19 years old.
— Pregnant women.
— People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions.
— People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
— People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from the flu, including health care workers and caregivers of children younger than six months, who are too young to be vaccinated.

The CDC recommends the following high-risk groups receive the swine flu vaccine when it becomes available sometime this month:

— Pregnant women.
— People who live with or care for children younger than six months.
— Health-care and emergency medical services personnel.
— People between the ages of six months and 24 year old.
— People 25 through 64 years of age who are at a higher risk for the swine flu because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.

The following groups of people should consult with a physician before getting either vaccine:

— People who have a severe allergy to chicken eggs.
— People who have had a severe reaction to a flu vaccine.
— People who have developed Gillain-Barre Syndrome within six weeks of getting an influenza vaccine.
— Children less than six months of age.
— People who have moderate-to-severe illness with a fever (they should wait until they recover).
