Fireworks in the pool? That's among the offerings at this year's second annual Galt Independence Day celebration to be held Saturday.
The family fun kicks off at 10 a.m. and most of the day's activities are free. Check out the co-ed volleyball, one-pitch softball, and single and doubles horseshoe tournaments during the day, and settle in for a picnic on Veterans Soccer Field and fireworks viewing that evening.
"It's going to be a really fun event," Vice Mayor Marylou Powers said. "We have a lot of things going on. We're hoping a lot of people will come out and enjoy a great day. It's an occasion for everyone to get out, meet their neighbors and just have a good time."
After the tournaments, families can gather on the field with picnics from 5 to 9 p.m. and enjoy live music by Inner Soul; food booths including snow cones, hot dogs and chips, sponsored by local nonprofits; a Kids Zone with bounce houses and a rock-climbing wall ($5 per person); and a freestyle skateboard contest for three age divisions, including ages 10 and under.
The fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m.
The city is still looking for entrants into the Old Time Country Fair exhibit, where locals can show off their quilt-making or vegetable canning skills. Categories include: quilts; photography for children under 18; preserves, including jams, jellies, pickled foods and relish; and baked goods. The event is new this year.
Drop your entries off for judging at the Chabolla Community Center between 3 and 7 p.m. on Friday. Registration forms and a full list of rules are available on the city's website at www.ci.galt.ca.us.
"It's just going to be a friendly competition," Powers said. "We have some contenders."
Winners will be on display between 5 and 9 p.m. Saturday.
Also, there will be a Galt 4-H petting zoo and reading aloud in front of the library, 1000 Caroline Ave.
The city is once again offering Fireworks in the Pool at the Gora Aquatic Center, although tickets are sold out.
Sports tournaments are still open, but registration must be received by Thursday, said Armando Solis, special projects administrator.
Call 209-366-7180 or email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
"You don't really have to have a lot of money to come out and have fun," Solis said.
This year, July 4 falls on a Wednesday, which is the same day as the Galt Market. The celebration is held near the Galt Market grounds, so when the Fourth falls on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (all market days), the city holds the celebration on the weekend prior.
Veterans Soccer Field is located at 900 Caroline Ave. There are bleachers and restrooms available.
