Democrat Ami Bera of Elk Grove, who defeated incumbent Republican Dan Lungren in the November election, was sworn into Congress last Thursday.

Bera’s district includes the community of Herald, plus Elk Grove and eastern Sacramento County. He has been appointed to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and to the Science, Space and Technology Committee.

“In an increasingly complex global landscape, relationships with other nations have tangible effects here at home and we need strategic thinking to guide our foreign policy in the 21st century,” Bera said in a news release. Additionally, the Sacramento region is uniquely situated to benefit from opening up new markets for our goods and services around the world. That would help create jobs here at home.”

A lifelong Californian and first-generation American, Bera is a medical doctor and the only Indian-American serving in Congress. He and his wife Janine, live in Elk Grove with their 15-year-old daughter, Sydra.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
