Today is the deadline for residents interested in filling the vacant seat on the Galt Joint Union Elementary School District board to apply. Former trustee Jennifer Collier resigned the position just 11 months after being elected.

After the applications are received, two board members will review each to determine board member eligibility. In addition to being at least 18 years of age, applicants must be registered to vote and have lived within the district for one year immediately preceding the appointment.

A special board meeting on a yet-to-be-set date will be held to publicly interview candidates. Trustees will select one by a majority vote.

The new provisional board member will begin Dec. 14 and serve through December 2012, at which time a general election will be held. He or she may run at that time.

Trustees currently receive a $180-a-month stipend and district health benefits. They took a self-imposed 10 percent cut earlier this year.
