Lodi police chased down and arrested a man and woman in connection with the stabbing of a teenager Tuesday at a Lodi apartment complex.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., Lodi police officers responded to the 2400 block of Eilers Lane, where a 19-year-old man was found with a serious cut to his throat as well as two stab wounds to his back, according to police.
The victim, Marcus Suplaban-Smith, was initially transferred to Lodi Memorial Hospital but was then taken to Kaiser South Sacramento Hospital.
His wounds were not considered to be life-threatening, according to Sgt. Val Chaban.
“He did not even know he had been stabbed at first,” Chaban said. “That is typical when there is an adrenaline rush like that.”
According to Chaban, Suplaban-Smith and his attacker got into an argument that escalated into a fight at the apartment complex. That was when a knife was pulled, and Suplaban-Smith was stabbed.
Police say the victim and other witnesses in the area were able to give a description of the vehicle that the suspect and a woman drove away in.
Other officers en route to the apartment complex said they passed a vehicle going in the opposite direction at a high rate of speed.
Police officers recognized it as the possible suspect’s vehicle and attempted to stop it.
Poilice said the driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Lodi resident Samantha Leeann Steman, refused to stop and continued for several blocks before driving into a cul de sac on the 2300 block of West Tokay Street.
Unbeknownst to officers, Steman also had her 1-year-old son in the car, police said.
Steman was ultimately arrested and faces charges of driving under the influence, evading police and child endangerment.
She was not charged with attempting to stab Suplaban-Smith.
The stabbing suspect, 25-year-old Buck Eugene Marchand, was released from prison on May 10 and is currently on parole for assault with a deadly weapon.
Marchand faces charges of attempted murder and parole violation, police said.
Steman’s son was released to a grandmother following Steman’s arrest.
