Lodi Police Department holding gun buyback event today

The Lodi Police Department is holding a gun buyback event today in the hopes of reducing gang-related crime in Lodi.

The buyback, funded by a California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention grant awarded to the city of Lodi, begins at 9 a.m. today in the parking lot of City Hall, 221 W. Pine St. The event will end when the money runs out.

"This provides an opportunity for people to get rid of unwanted firearms," said Sgt. Sierra Brucia of the Lodi Police Department. "Some people receive them as inheritances or from family members and they don't want them."

Brucia added that the program can make guns less available to criminals, such as those who burglarize homes and steal firearms that are not properly locked up.

Lodi police will purchase inoperative guns for $25, shotguns, rifles and handguns for $100, and assault rifles for $200.

Ammunition will not be purchased, but will be accepted.

There is a maximum purchase of $500 per person, and no questions will be asked at the time of the exchange. Proof of Lodi residency is required.
