Costco (209-366-7300) will not open until June, but the hiring process for the big-box retailer is in the works.

Wet weather has delayed the store's opening because construction crews need about two weeks of dry weather to pave the parking lots and driveways, developer Dale Gillespie said.

The delays pushed the opening date from March to sometime in June.

"We are doing as much as we can with the constraints of the wet weather," Gillespie said.

So far, workers have paved a section of Harney Lane, installed signals, poured some curbs for the driveways and landscaped around the store, he said.

The entire Costco building is up, and the heating and air conditioning system is installed. Costco can also start installing fixtures and stocking the store because they have use of a construction road, Gillespie said.

Costco is a bulk-buy retailer, and memberships range in price from $50 to $100. To get a membership card, call 800-774-2678.

The store plans hire 180 employees. Anyone looking for a job at the Lodi Costco needs to fill out an online application at the Costco website, general manager Denise Zizzo said.

She is working with the corporate office to get Lodi added as one of the locations where people can apply, and said those interested in employment should continue checking the website.

In a previous article, Jeff Abadir, regional vice president for Costco, said that roughly 60 percent of the store's workers are full-time and the average wage is $22 an hour.

The new Lodi location is required to hire some employees from the Costco in Stockton because it will take some of its customers, Zizzo said. The first step will be interviewing any transfers.

Then the hiring staff will go through online applications for new employees and contact them for an interview appointment if interested.

She stressed that prospective employees should fill out the online application and not approach the construction trailers.

To apply, go to Costco.com. Click on "employment opportunities" at the bottom of the page. Click on the link under "Warehouses, Depots and Other Businesses," and that will take you to the site where you can apply by store.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
