Galt Planning Commission may add two members

The Galt City Council has referred a proposal to add two members to the city’s Planning Commission back to the commission for a recommendation. The commission will likely consider the proposal in April.

If eventually adopted, the ordinance would increase the number of planning commission members to seven from five.

In other action, the council:

Voted to spend up to $20,000 to demolish the vacant Jaycees Hall, as repair costs have proven to be too high, according to city staff.

Last year, The Gathering Place church showed interest in rehabilitating the building at 405 5th St. so that it could serve as a community center. But that was prior to a roof report in January that found an estimated $25,000 in structural upgrades, plus an additional $25,000 to $50,000 in other work to make it inhabitable.

The building was constructed in the 1950s and originally used as a women's auxiliary hall, but has no historical value, the city has determined.

Received a report from fellow council members regarding the city's strategic plan, which included an update on the Walmart project. Groundbreaking is expected in the fall, with an opening in 2014.
