After years of discussion, the city of Galt has reached a tentative lease agreement for property from the Union Pacific Railroad. The land will be part of the city’s efforts to revitalize its Old Town area, and will be made into a public parking lot.
However, if the Galt City Council approves the agreement at its regular meeting Tuesday, an additional $100,000 or more will be required to build an 8-foot, “vandal-resistant” fence along the active railroad tracks. That money is expected to come from a Community Development Block Grant as part of the Quiet Zone project also underway along the railroad tracks, according to a written staff report to the city council.
The property to be leased, which includes most of the vacant property along the eastside of the tracks between A and F streets, would also be used for landscaping. It cannot be used for an active recreational park, gazebo, rose garden or general social venue under the agreement.
The lease is for 20 years. If the railroad company opts to not renew it after 10 years, it must refund the city its $25,000 under the agreement. The money was originally to have come from redevelopment funding, but the state eliminated that funding a couple of years ago. Instead, the one-time fee to UPRR will come from the park capital impact fee account.
City staff estimates that annual maintenance such as picking up trash and periodically mowing any grass planted will cost between $2,000 and $4,000 annually.
The city council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the city council chambers at City Hall, 380 Civic Drive, Galt.
