Lodi City Councilman Alan Nakanishi’s son, Jon Nakanishi, 42, is in the hospital after a rafting accident on the Truckee River this weekend.
Alan Nakanishi and his son were in the same raft going down the river to celebrate Father’s Day when Jon Nakanishi fell into the cold water, Alan Nakanishi said.
He managed to swim to the side and collapsed.
Jon Nakanishi’s brother-in-law gave him CPR and he was resuscitated.
Alan Nakanishi said his son’s muscles froze from the cold water. He was taken to the Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee, and is currently in a medically induced coma.
“It was a good day because we were celebrating, but we trust in God he will be OK,” Alan Nakanishi said.
Jon Nakanishi is an attorney in Susanville who serves as Lassen Superior Court Family Law Facilitator and a judge of Lassen Teen Court.
He won the June primary for Lassen Superior Court judge.
In his candidacy statement, Jon Nakanishi credits his family for his love of America.
“My father, a U.S. war veteran, gave me a strong sense of pride for my country and the freedoms we should not take for granted,” Nakanishi said. “ I was taught to value a hard work ethic, responsibility, and accountability.”
Alan Nakanishi said his family had been at the hospital all day Sunday.
“We are hopeful and we are praying for a quick recovery,” he said.
