Sherwood Carthen was pastor of a church called Family Worship Center in Sacramento in 1990 when Wayman Tisdale, a star with the Sacramento Kings at the time, asked him if he'd consider being the basketball team's chaplain.

Carthen said he didn't know professional basketball teams had chaplains who discussed the Bible with interested players. But the Kings had just lost their chaplain, and Tisdale, a member of Carthen's church, thought Carthen would be perfect as the team chaplain.
