Local law enforcement agencies from Sacramento, Placer and Yolo counties will celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunications Week beginning Monday by honoring those in their agencies who are the first point of contact in the event of an emergency.

Often, 911 police and fire dispatchers are the unsung heroes behind the scenes when a crisis strikes, dispatching emergency professionals and equipment and rendering lifesaving assistance to citizens, Galt Police Lt. Jim Uptegrove said in an email.

The Galt Police Department is hosting the 17th annual Organization of Public Safety Telecommunicator of the Year Awards Banquet kick-off event Saturday at Cal Expo in Sacramento.

This year, the organization has identified the following two groups to receive proceeds from donations raised during this event:

  • Foothills K-9 Association, in memory of fallen Galt Police Officer Kevin Tonn, 5098 Foothills Boulevard No. 3-424, Roseville, CA 95747. Proceeds will be used to purchase a K-9 for the Galt Police Department.
  • Sacramento County Animal Shelter, in memory of fallen Animal Control Officer Roy Marcum, 3839 Bradshaw Road, Sacramento, CA 95827. Proceeds will be used to sponsor a new Habitat Room in Roy Marcum's name.

Both men were killed in Galt.

Although Saturday's event is private, Uptegrove said local community partners wishing to celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunications Week are invited to donate to either of the two organizations.
