A driver who died Tuesday afternoon in a single-car accident at Peltier Road near Davis Road has not been identified, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department.

The driver was heading east on Peltier when their Toyota sedan collided with an oak tree on the right side of the road. Then, the car careened off the road and caught fire.

The coroner is still identifying the driver and notifying the next of kin, said Deputy Les Garcia, a spokesman for the Sheriff’s department.

The accident took place shortly after 3 p.m., and the car was consumed by flames for about two minutes, said Angel Arceo, a California Highway Patrol officer.

Arcero said the driver’s gender and vehicle model were unknown due to damage sustained during the fire. An autopsy and toxicology test will be conducted on the driver, he said.
