Any fan of 'No Reservations' could tell you that this is going to be the most epic food event of the year for Lodi. As a purveyor on non-traditional eateries, I can tell you that there is an art to preparation in tight places. Furthermore, any chef would argue that cuisine is an art - I mean, it's creative, it takes media and creates something more valuable than the sum of the parts.
I feel like attacking this endeavor because it doesn't adhere to a preconceived idea of art might be misguided. Not everyone in our community has the resources or privilege to be an artist or to collect art - both pricey hobbies if not downright bourgeois. Let's think outside the box, and have a tasty time.

Another idea is to make the competition a street-fair ordeal, with local artists showing their works - best of both worlds?

What a great idea. I would love to be a judge.

I give Bozo the Clown awards to Bob Johnson and Dave Kirsten for this frivolous waste of our government tax money. This has nothing to do with the arts in Lodi, but how the city and it's 3 amigos can dodge the financial ramifications by pawning it off as an arts event? I think the event is unique and should be fully sponsored by the Lodi Wine & Visitors' Center, chamber of commerce, DLBP, or, better yet, the city of Lodi. Use this arts grant funding for what it is and in programs and events that are community driven. It's time the Lodi Arts Commission leaves its old fashioned ways behind and involves all citizens of Lodi in events that are government funded. I'm still wondering who the persons were that granted that $20,000 to the Geweke Arts Foundation a few years back? Stop the non-sensical spending of our arts funding!
