A stretch of Highway 12 from the 99 freeway to five miles east will be dedicated in the name of a California Department of Transportation worker who was struck and killed four years ago.

Donald Lichliter was working on tree maintenance when he was hit by a car and killed on July 23, 2009.

Fundraising and donations by Caltrans employees, the International Union of Operating Engineers, and Lichliter’s family and friends have paid for the signs designating a portion of Highway 12 the “Donald Mark Lichliter Memorial Highway.”

Since 1924, 180 Caltrans workers have been killed in the line of duty. One of the biggest hazards is from motorists who do not exercise caution while driving where highway workers are present.

A ceremony will begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Caltrans maintenance building, 845 E. Pine St. in Lodi.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
