Thousands of dollars are pouring into Lodi council campaigns

Several donors are pouring thousands of dollars into the Lodi City Council race, according to recent campaign filings.

Phil Katzakian is leading the pack and has received $18,159. The other incumbent, Larry Hansen, is in second with $14,552.

Challenger John Johnson has raised $9,754, while Alan Nakanishi has received $8,750.

Tony Amador, who had not raised any money when the first election statements came out, has raised $7,699. Jay Patel raised $1,935, while Timothy Reed has not yet raised any money.

Several big donors have provided boosts to four of the candidates' campaigns.

The Lodi Board of Realtors Political Action Committee contributed $2,000 to Hansen and $2,000 to Johnson.

The president and CEO of Food-4-Less, John Quinn, gave $2,800 to Nakanishi and $2,500 to Amador. The owner of McDonald's, C.C. Yin, also gave Nakanishi $2,800.

    Before you vote for Hansen, Katzakian or Nakanishi, be sure to check the employees compensation website published by the state controllers office, and voted into Lodi statutes by these 3 past and present council representatives. Many include compensation of $17,000 health care plans, including eyecare and dental, to the biggest of the biggies. Some of these surely nepotic and favor granting positions are: stage technician p/t 30,804-37,440, scene technician p/t 37,440, recreation leader p/t 16,640-20,217, house manager 52,000, planning commission member 41,600 (8 positions), police laborer b 20,113-24,336 (9 positions), laborer B other departments (4). Most job titles are vague and the list is just a mumbo jumbo of confusion, seemingly to confuse. Please read this wage and benefit list submitted by your own city leaders and just look at the many repetitive and same job titles used in different departments. One major reason not to vote for the above named individuals.

    Does Mr. Nakanishi get this"loan" interest free? Doesn't he have enough cash of his own to plunk down a measly 14 grand? Rumor goes that's just chump change for the good old boys.

    I am certain that the transfer of funds from Dr. Nakanishi's BOE campaign fund are perfectly within the law, I would like to see the law change that at the end of one's campaign that funds need to be donated to a non-profit or charitable organization. Or at least that funds raised for one political office cannot be used for another political office.

    Why is Mr. Nakanishi able to "loan" himself $15,291from his board of equalization fund? That's not even his own personal money to spend, is it? Governor Schwartznegger just signed a bill authored by Alyson Huber that will scrutinize worthless boards such as this one and dismantle them if there are any irregularities or these boards serve no purpose other than to create a political position for old-timers like Mr. Nakanishi and the well connected to continue building their wealthy government portfolio. Most of those positions on the worthless boards are usually given as a favor by the governors for past favors, voting party lines, etc. I believe the board of equalization is one of those unneeded boards and will be defunct. When, how and will Mr. Nakanishi even have to return this "loan" to that boards funds? I don't think that Lodi needs another senior citizen, 70 years old, that has already had his try at Lodi politics, although he was a very respected member of that council. Lodi needs council representatives that are younger, vibrant and want to turn Lodi into a successful business community, not just a tourist own inundated with mostly wineries and their tasting rooms, and those mostly by the controllers and large, wealthy outside county interests that seem to want to control the destiny of Lodi by their old ideas and their use of the good old boy systwm. Lodi needs thriving new businesses with at least a living wage and not just these seasonal and part-time work the wine and agricultural industry have to offer. There's plenty of room for both those interests and small business, commercial and industrial growth. Why is it that your chamber of commerce representative hasn't brought in any decent, large businesses to the Lodi area? Most new businesses here are local people, as are most new businesses, with minimum wage paying type jobs and yet Mr. Patrick finds it more important to takes his constant trips to China to promote Lodi wines and maybe even dry beans. Ms. Watts of the DLBP has no real successful track record promoting local businesses either? And the wine and tourist center out at Wine & Roses? That's all fine and dandy, but why the lack of a downtown Lodi tourist and information center, and I don't mean the little hole in the wall tucked upstairs in the old Woolworth's building? Isn't there something wrong with that picture? We need a completely new change in the way city council takes care of their good old boy friends and business associates and with 3 new faces on council, hopefully they will make drastic changes in the leadership of the Lodi chamber of commerce, DLBP and the wine and tourist centerand locate that center in an area of beautiful housing and parks, with scenery attractive to those who come here from out of the area to tempt them to even relocate here.

    Roy, the only endorsement given Larry Hansen is by Mr. Patrick, the non-union, low wage , keep the businesses out of Lodi and supporter of the good old boy wine businesses, from the Lodi chamber of commerce. I believe the stat chamber of commerce and democratic party have endorsed Katzakian. B oth losers in my book and time for those two old ment to retire, especially Hansen. Lodi voters, send these two old fools back to pasture where they belong. Lodi is no longer living in their 1950's reign of terror and high utility rates. Just this week at Wednesday's council meeting these 2 and Bob Johnson voted to raise our electrical and utility rates once again. Time for them to go. Vote J Johnson, Patel, Amador or Reed if you want Lodi headed in a positive direction and not the same old senior citizen ideas and domination with the 3 elderly male council votes passing literally every issue.

    Waste Management supports Larry Hansen with big campaign donations.
    Can you say "quid pro quo" ? Seriously!
    Earlier this year, three city councilmen voted to award Waste Management a twenty year "no compete contract with a built in annual increase tied to the comsumer price index of the bay area. No competing refuse companies were given an opportunity to bid on this juicy contract.
    There is an official letter from Waste Management to the city accepting the city's proposal. The city council awarded a twenty year---no compete--- contract to WM for one million dollars---to be spent on Grape Bowl projects. Quid pro quo!
    IT is no surprise to me that Waste Management donates six figures to Mr. Hansen's re-election campaign. Hansen is the key. Johnson and Katzakian vote with Hansen every time. Buy Hansen and get the other votes. Buy one get two free.
