A veteran San Joaquin County probation officer faces multiple charges including attempted murder after police said he led officers on a chase that ended in Lodi.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Larry Alan King, 44, was taken into custody after being accused of shooting several rounds from a rifle at a motorist on East French Camp Road and South Airport Way earlier that day.

No one was injured in the shooting, but King had two children in his car at the time of the incident and had tailed the victim on Highway 99 before the shooting, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office.

King was found in the 1300 block of South Central Avenue in Lodi around 9:30 p.m., officials said.

Though the probation department would not comment, a press release from the department did state that King has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

“The Probation Department is very concerned about this incident involving one of our employees,” the statement read. “[But] the Probation Department cannot provide any further information at this time as this is a confidential personnel matter.”

King, a 12-year employee of the department, is currently an assistant deputy chief probation officer.

He faces charges that include attempted willful murder, child abuse/endangerment and falsely reporting a bomb, among other charges.

He is being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court in Stockton today.
