Six Bear Creek High School students took home medals from the SkillsUSA state tournament in Fresno.
Juniors Sean O'Reilly, Collie Kassab, Matthew Horner and sophomores Steven Reiber and Tom Hennig won a gold medal in the competition's Quiz Bowl event.
Quiz Bowl is a Jeopardy-style contest where students answer questions on everything from current events to job skills to math problems, said Roger Crane, a teacher at Bear Creek and SkillsUSA adviser with fellow Teacher Richard Rizzonelli.
Crane said students from Bear Creek have won the state title in Quiz Bowl three of the last five years.
"We had a team five years ago that was just brilliant, and it just caught on," Crane said.
The Quiz Bowl team will move on to the SkillsUSA national conference in Kansas City, Mo. June 24 to 28.
At the state competition Horner also won a gold medal in the Related Technical Math event. Usually that honor would entitle him to compete in that event at the national competition.
However, according to SkillsUSA rules, students are only allowed to compete in one national event. Since Horner also qualified for Quiz Bowl, he decided to compete with his team.
A Bear Creek student has won the state Related Technical Math event three out of the last four years.
"Our overall math program at Bear Creek is pretty exceptional," Crane said.
Brandon Hoang, a freshman, won a silver medal in the Introduction to Drafting A event.
