A new trial will begin today for a Lodi woman already convicted of attempted murder and child endangerment to determine whether she was mentally competent at the time of the crime.
Christine Leach, 45, has spent several months in a state hospital since her arrest in October 2011.
Leach had been stopped in her white Chevrolet Malibu behind several vehicles that were going west on Pine Street at the railroad tracks in Lodi when a train came through. According to witnesses, Leach pulled out of the line of cars, stepped on the gas and drove her Malibu west in the eastbound lane, accelerating into the train.
Leach didn’t sustain any injuries. Her 5-year-old daughter was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center.
Leach underwent several months of psychiatric treatment at Napa State Hospital until a judge ruled her competent enough to stand trial.
Last month, a San Joaquin County jury found Leach guilty of attempted murder and child endangerment after a brief deliberation.
