A Lodi woman accused of deserting her children has been released from county jail and will return to court next month.

Ebonitra Jones, 36, was arrested early Friday morning by the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Department after being found unconscious on the 19000 block of North Windwood Drive in Woodbridge with an infant in her lap, police said. After her arrest, police found three other children under the ages of 14 inside a vacant residence on the 100 block of South Corinth Avenue in Lodi.

She was detained in San Joaquin County Jail over the weekend and released from custody Tuesday afternoon, said her attorney, Doug Goss.

“She was released because the children are in the care of Child Protective Services and there are issues about her need for care,” he said. “I think we will discover she has some psychological issues.”

Jones’ relatives indicated she is suffering from postpartum depression, Goss said.

“Apparently she had a child and nine months later she had another child and never recovered from the first,” Goss said. “It’s a sad case.”

Jones faces four felony counts of child abandonment and will return to court Oct. 4.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
