An hours-long fire that burned down a church in Thornton injured one firefighter who was combating the blaze late Sunday.

Thornton firefighters received a call at approximately 10:54 p.m. Sunday that the Community Baptist Church on Mokelumne Avenue and Thornton Road was on fire, said Vince Tafuri, fire chief for the Thornton Fire Department.

Once on scene, Tafuri said smoke and flames were erupting from the roof of the church.

Firefighters from the Thornton Fire Department, the Lodi Fire Department, Woodbridge Fire District and Cosumnes Community Services District responded to the blaze, which lasted from late Sunday until the last fire unit left Monday afternoon.

One firefighter suffered heat exhausting while battling the blaze, Tafuri said, but the firefighter did not go to the hospital.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
