Lodi’s Storm Drain Detectives will present their annual review of the Mokelumne River water quality on Thursday evening.

The group of student scientists from Lodi schools have tested and tracked the water since August. The program is in its 11th year, and has helped residents understand that water run-off drains untreated water into the river and Woodbridge Irrigation Canal, said Kathy Grant, watershed education coordinator, in a news release.

The presentation will include guest speakers from the city of Lodi’s engineering staff and Dr. Loren Oki, a University of California, Davis researcher, who will discuss the effects of urban runoff.

Lodi High School students from Melissa Turner’s honor biology class will discuss the what the students test for once a month at five different sites along the river. Tokay High School teacher Sandi Starr’s marine biology students will discuss the temperature and dissolved oxygen in the water and the possible affect on fish.

Lodi Academy and Jim Elliot Christian High School also collected data.

The presentation will start at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lodi Public Library’s Community Room, 201 W. Locust, Lodi.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
