Although there has not been an increase in thefts in the area, local police departments are warning residents ’tis the season for incoming and outgoing packages to be stolen from porches.
“No problems so far here this season, but this crime seems to be popular among thieves these days,” Galt Police Lt. Brian Vizzusi said.
The City of Galt has issued a warning to track all orders, as online ordering and home package delivery is in full swing this time of year. That way, you can meet delivery drivers as they arrive so that packages can be stowed inside your home quickly.
If you are unable to be home during deliveries, police recommend you make arrangements to have a neighbor pick up parcels or reschedule a time when you will be available.
Also, report any suspicious people or vehicles in Galt to police at 209-366-7100.
Vizzusi termed the warning a “preemptive strike” with hopes of preventing such thefts, which have been commonplace in the greater Sacramento area. Earlier this week, two people were arrested in Roseville in a vehicle filled with packages not addressed to them when an alert resident called police in Roseville to report that someone had just stolen a package from her neighbor’s house.
The Lodi Police Department echoed Galt’s concerns. Officers said that while there hasn’t been a recent wave of package thefts, residents should be wary.
“It’s always a concern, especially this time of year,” Lt. Sierra Brucia said./News-Sentinel Staff Writer Kris Anderson contributed to this report.
