A Lodi attorney has won a $179 million verdict in federal court in what he believes may be the largest-ever single plaintiff verdict in a whistleblower case.
Greg Davenport of Lodi and fellow attorneys Lawrance Bohm and Erika Gaspar secured the judgment from a jury Wednesday against Catholic Healthcare West, now known as Dignity Health Systems. They filed suit on behalf of Ani Chopourian, who worked as a physicians’ assistant at two Sacramento hospitals.
Chopourian, of Sacramento, was awarded damages based on claims of sexual harassment, defamation, wrongful termination and her employers’ failure to provide meal and rest breaks on 200 occasions, according to court records.
“This is an important verdict for the United States,” Davenport said by cellphone shortly after the verdict was read. “The jury sent a message holding large health corporations responsible.”
Davenport, whose father Ray Davenport is a former Lodi City Councilman, practices law out of his Stockton office.
