- Keeping animals warm in winter
-
Pets lose most of their body heat from the pads of their feet,
their ears and their respiratory tract. The best way to guard your
animals against the cold is keeping a close eye on them.
If an animal shows signs of frostbite, you can soak his or her
extremities in warm water for about 20 minutes to melt the ice
crystals and restore circulation. Once your pet is warm, wrap her
up in some blankets and take her to the veterinarian.
If your animal displays signs of hypothermia, you need to get
your pet warm and take him or her to your veterinarian.
If you light a fire or plug in a space heater to keep your home
toasty warm, remember that the heat will be as attractive to your
pets as to you. As your dog or cat snuggles up to the warmth, keep
an eye out to make sure that no tails or paws come in contact with
flames, heating coils, or hot surfaces. Pets can either burn
themselves or knock the heat source over.
If you must leave your pet outside for an extended period of
time, give them something warm to lie in. Hay is a great insulator
that they can snuggle down in, and be sure to provide them with
plenty of non-frozen water. Try leaving out a hot water bottle,
wrapped in a towel so it won't burn your pet's skin.

Snuggled under a pink and white polka-dot blanket, Toffee,
Taffy, Ebony and Skittles nibbled and growled at each other,
completely unaware of the cold front in Lodi that will persist in
the coming weeks.
The four puppies were among just a handful of dogs and cats
being cared for at the Animal Friends Connection on Cherokee Lane,
with manager Patricia Sherman spearheading the effort to make sure
each and every one will be kept warm and well-fed during the cold
winter months.
