After thousands of conversations, campaign signs and votes, ballots were tallied and Steve Moore was re-elected last month for another four-year term as San Joaquin County’s Sheriff/Coroner. It was a landslide over Robert “Bobby” Moreno, who retired in March 2009 as a Sheriff’s lieutenant.

In terms of donations, Moore also had a landslide: 152 people or businesses gave money to his campaign, a stark contrast to Moreno’s 19 donors. The numbers come from campaign finance statements released by San Joaquin County’s registrar of voters; all candidates must list donations of $100 or more.

Moore’s contributors read like a list of county farmers, along with the district attorney and several heavyweight developers, including A.G. Spanos, Holman Investors and F&H Construction. Moreno’s list includes several Sheriff’s deputies but clearly lacks the corporate donors.

Moore received $4,000 from Food-4-Less, $5,000 from housing developers Holman Investors, $2,500 from an Escalon sandbagging company, $1,000 from Lodi farmer Bruce Mettler, $1,000 from Lange Twins in Acampo, $1,000 from Chase Chevrolet, and donations from numerous other companies and farmers. All told, 15 donors contributed $1,000 or more to Moore’s campaign.

Four people — all individuals, not corporations — made $1,000-plus contributions to Moreno’s efforts to unseat Moore. The largest donation was $8,277 from Lauro Tejada, who works in Moreno’s family-owned Stockton flower shop. A Delta Health Systems employee donated $5,000, while another $3,000 came from a communications employee at Dameron Hospital. Moreno’s mother donated $2,100.

The incumbent Sheriff ran his first campaign four years ago with a focus on agricultural crimes and keeping deputies at far ends of the county, including Woodbridge and Lockeford. A total of 25 Lodi residents contributed to his 2010 campaign, with another two from Woodbridge and four from Acampo. Eighteen donations came from Moore’s hometown of Linden.

Moreno received one donation each from Lodi and Acampo; the remainder of his 19 donations came from Stockton, where Moreno lives.
