A man from Delhi was taken into custody by the Merced County Sheriff's officers at a Flag City truck stop near Interstate 5.

According to Sheriff Mark Pazin, Jason Curtis Reed, 35, was arrested Thursday on murder charges for the death of his 67-year-old father. The father was found bleeding from the mouth on New Year's Day by his daughter in the house he shared with his son. When medical help arrived, they found the man had died, police said.

Reed was nowhere to be found and the family car was missing, which makes him a suspect in the first registered homicide of the year for Merced County, according to Pazin.

While officers began the search, Reed was in contact with another sibling in Northern California. According to police, Reed informed his brother that he was at a truck stop in the Lodi area and had run out of gas and money. The family then relayed this information to police.

"They had just lost their father. They were very helpful in keeping us abreast of where the brother was, and fortunately it all worked out," said Pazin.

Reed was arrested at the Flying J truck stop on Highway 12 near I-5 by early afternoon without incident. The arrest was made in cooperation with the California Highway Patrol and the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Department.

Reed is being held without bail at the Merced County Jail on murder charges. Detectives have not said how the father died, and they have not recovered a murder weapon.
