Rep. Ami Bera, D-Elk Grove, was one of 26 Democrats to support a bill that would require President Barack Obama to submit either a balanced budget by the 2014 fiscal year or an estimate stating by which year the budget will be balanced.
The bill was approved by the House by a 253-167 vote, with a large majority of the votes coming from Republicans, according to Bera's office.
"Our government needs to do its job, which starts with passing a budget," Bera said in a written statement. "A budget lays out our priorities and will start to address our debt.
"I voted for this bill to demand that we put a plan in place that can lead to a smart, responsible budget," Bera added. "It's time for Congress to do its job and take a bipartisan, balanced approach."
Bera's district includes Herald, Elk Grove and communities north and east of Elk Grove.
