A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Jan. 11 for Robert Rappleye, the Galt High School assistant principal charged with assault with a deadly weapon in an alleged golf course incident. He pleaded not guilty at a recent court hearing.

According to a police report, Rappleye of Elk Grove was golfing at the Greenhorn Creek Golf Course in Angels Camp in July when police said he and his golfing partners became angry over the pace of play by a husband and wife.

Police said a verbal argument became physical when Rappleye, then 61, took a golf club and struck the husband twice. The husband was injured on the left arm and shoulder blade after attempting to block the blows, according to witnesses in the police report.

Rappleye was arrested and booked into the Calaveras County Jail that night, and released the next morning.

The Angels Camp Police Department recommended to the District Attorney's Office that Rappleye be charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The charges can carry fines of up to $10,000 each or jail time.

Rappleye is a long-time employee of the Galt Joint Union High School District who has been on paid leave since the beginning of the school year.
