A fire occurred off Highway 99 near Morada on Thursday. Eye witnesses said they saw multiple sparks coming from a train headed toward Lodi, according to Chief Operator John Hellige of the Stockton Fire Department. The train was later stopped in Lodi, and the obstruction causing the sparks was removed.
Hellige said that roughly 50 to 70 acres were burned, but it was hard to tell because the train kept lighting fires as it traveled.
"It was so spread out," Hellige said. "It was 10 acres here and 20 acres there."
Between Stockton and neighboring fire departments, 12 engines, two trucks and five dispatch vehicles were called out. Roughly 60 firefighters were sent out to battle the flames.
The fire's status was unknown as of press time.
