Yard supervisors added to union contract in Galt elementary school district

For the first time, Galt Joint Union Elementary School District yard supervisors have been added to the local California State Employees Association union contract. The change was approved at Wednesday’s regular school board meeting.

The 20-page contract includes standard wording related to layoffs, promotions and evaluations, and restates the position’s previously set salary range. Yard supervisors earn between $8.34 and $10.14 per hour, depending on their years of service, but do not receive sick, holiday or vacation leave pay.

The agreement ends in June 2016.

In other action Wednesday, the school board:

  • Learned that each Bright Future Learning Center has received $319 to purchase 12 to 15 books, thanks to overage funds from the Re-Open School Libraries efforts led by parent volunteer Leesa Klotz during last school year.
  • Received a report from Judy Bullard, director of curriculum, about voluntary Wednesday Teacher Collaboration Sessions for Common Core State Standards implementation. This collaboration effort will strengthen districtwide professional learning community efforts, Superintendent Karen Schauer said in an email.
  • Awarded a contract to Compass Learning to create personalized learning activities for students as the district transitions to the Common Core State Standards. These activities will be created from results of the Measures of Academic test currently being administered to district students. The course software can be accessed in the classroom, at Bright Future Learning Centers and at home using computers, laptops, Chromebooks or smartphones. The district is also considering ways the Galt Public Library can serve as an access hub for this new courseware, according to Schauer.
