Although Democrat Cathleen Galgiani has already begun plans for her new seat in the State Senate, San Joaquin County's registrar of voters says that Galgiani hasn't won just yet.

County Registrar Austin Erdman said Tuesday that "more than likely," Galgiani will defeat Republican Bill Berryhill, but no one will know for sure until Friday.

Erdman said that election officials employ a technique called "trending." Most of the remaining votes to be counted are from San Joaquin County, which thus far has favored Galgiani. Berryhill carried Stanislaus County, which has fewer voters in the 5th State Senate District, Erdman said.

Erdman said he is having his election supervisors in San Joaquin County double-check about 4,000 ballot that were rejected.

For example, some voters may have gone to the wrong polling place and voted on the wrong ballot. Those ballots would have some candidates or ballot measures that would be valid where the voter is registered, but not where the voter cast his or her ballot, Erdman said. The valid ones would count, but the invalid ones would be discounted, he said.

San Joaquin County has an additional 1,600 damaged ballots to be counted, Erdman said.

Though it looks like Galgiani will eke out a victory, Erdman said, "It's not over till it's over."

And that will be Friday.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
